Polaroid Series
The Polaroid Series of paintings is built around a unique representation of the lived-in world, as seen through a photographic process that distorts. In the same way our memories come to us altered or skewed, or on the edge of our consciousness like fleeting impressions, the Polaroid seems to offer hard visual evidence.
Unlike any other photographic process, the Polaroid print was there.
Our memories live within us like increasingly vague interpretations of a distant reality that can be recalled randomly almost by magic. It could be a taste, sound, or smell that ignites a memory as it develops in our mind. The Polaroid process captures this process coincidentally, but offers more.
Generally the Polaroid is considered a ‘true’ document, albeit subverted by the ‘low fi’ nature of the chemical process. It’s the opposing forces of document as proof and the distorted chemical process, that seem to stir feelings of nostalgia and remorse.
Memories are a reminder of our lost past, they can be happy or sad memories, but they are always tinged with the tragedy of time we will never have again.
